Welcome to the Kanpur Spastic Centre!




Hi! Why don't you read about my schoolmates?



Pratiyush

Pratiyush is in class 3. He has cerebral palsy. This has resulted in a severe speech problem, along with confining him to a wheel chair. Despite his handicap, he has just taken the centre's Third Grade Exams.




















Piyush and Arjun


Piyush (flowery shirt) and Arjun (checked shirt) both have cerebral palsy and mental retardation. They are both in pre-school. They are very active and can be found exploring the school grounds when they are not doing their schoolwork.




Neha

Neha is in class 8. She has physical impairtmant in line with spasticity, which impairs her ability to write. She also has some speech disability. Despite her handicaps, she has just given the National Open Board exams for class 8, administered at the centre.




Kamal Pal Singh

Kamal Pal is 22 years old. He is mentally retarded and is no longer a student at the centre. He still comes to the centre, however, and participates in vocational training as physical therapy. Here he is seen on the "Charkha" or bobbin loader.

























Abhilash Gupta

Abhilash is physically disabled but mentally extremely sharp. He seen here in vocational training on the handloom, which he has chosen to do. The handlooms were a generous donation from the Indian Embassy in Japan.



Vikas

Vikas is 26 years old. He is mentally retarded and not a student at the centre. He comes to get some physical therapy, and here he is seen here on the handloom.









Abhishek

Abhishek is 14 years old. He has cerebral palsy. His oral work is strong and he is extremely articulate. His written work is poor due to impaired eyesight. He enjoys singing and does it very well.













Ishita Singh

Ishita is 12 years old. She has Downs Syndrome. She loves performance arts, dancing and singing in particular. She is also learning on the two computers at the centre.








Tanish and Rachna

Tanish is 2.5 years old. She is seen here with her mother, Rachna. A year ago she was starting to walk. She developed an infection and after recovery, was left unable to walk. She has never regained this capability. She and her mother have been coming to the Home Management section of the spastic centre for 3 months.
